Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach

Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach is a constantly-updated "classic" of computer science.

It is written by authors John Hennessy and David Patterson.  It is thus sometimes referred to in certain circles as the "HP book".

John Hennessy developed one of the first commercial RISC microprocessors. He received the Eckert-Mauchly award (IEEE Computer Society) in 2001 for contribution to RISC processors.

David Patterson has been teaching computer architecture at UC Berkeley since 1977 and has received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California.

One of the reviews of the 5th Edition (published in 2012) praise its:

"revised chapter on data-level parallelism, which demystifies GPU architectures".

James Hamilton of Amazon Web Services (Distinguished Engineer) compares the book to a "fine wine".
